DepicT! ‘07 - Call for entries now open for 90 second film competition
DepicT!
short film competition, part of the renowned Encounters International
Short Film Festival (Wed 21 – Sun 25 Nov ‘07), once again challenges
filmmakers from across the globe to come up with a compelling,
imaginative idea and distil it into 90 seconds of cinematic originality.
Not only will shortlisted films gain priceless industry exposure at Encounters, “‘The UK's most important short film festival’” (The Guardian), but they’ll be in the running for the top cash prize of £2000.
As in previous years, the judges (who last year included Slinky filmmaker Chris Shephard and Aardman Animations founding director David Sproxton) are on the lookout for well-crafted, imaginative and engaging mini-masterpieces. We encourage films from all over the world and are open to all production techniques; last year we received a record number of entries from 25 countries, ranging from animation and experimental to documentary and drama. It couldn’t be easier to submit your films – simply visit the new DepicT! Website at depict.org to upload them via our online entry system.
New this year: the DepicT! ‘07 shortlisted entries will be made available for theatrical screenings in cinemas across the UK through the Digital Screen Network in ‘08*, thanks to a new partnership with Arts Alliance Media. All shortlisted filmmakers will also receive an Encounters Network Delegate pass with all the trimmings, as well as a free place in the popular Encounters Film School.
Leigh Hodgkinson, winner DepicT! ‘06 Animation and Audience Awards with ‘Flighty’:
Being
included in the DepicT! shortlist was a brilliant experience. It is
great that the DepicT! competition exists, as it gives these bite-sized
creations a reputable home and gives the films exposure. I love the way
DepicT! also serves as a platform that actively encourages comments
online (good and bad) - as anything that allows an exchange of ideas
about film and animation can only ever be a good thing.
Ruth Meehan, winner DepicT! '06 Live Action Award with ‘And the Red Man Went Green’:
The
whole experience of DepicT! '06 has been fantastic from beginning to
end. It was great to participate online with such an interesting and
diverse range of short films. I had a blast at Encounters meeting both
the filmmakers and the judges.
Maddy Probst, DepicT! Co-ordinator says:
'DepicT!
offers a brilliant opportunity for filmmakers across the globe to
challenge themselves to come up with a strong, imaginative idea and
work out a way to engage audiences in just 90 seconds, whether it’s a
drama, a comedy, a documentary or something much more abstract. As
short film on the web is increasingly about the cult of the amateur,
DepicT! - the original ultra short film competition in Britain - offers
a space for quality and ambition, giving short-listed filmmakers a
prime industry window and networking opportunities at the UK’s leading
short film festival Encounters.'
For more information, to submit your films and to view our gallery of previously shortlisted films, visit DepicT!’s brand new website at depict.org
Deadline for submissions: Mon 3 Sept ‘07, 1700hrs (GMT)
DepicT! is a Watershed project as part of Encounters International
Short Film Festival supported by Aardman Animations, Films@59 and Arts

The former manager of The Specials and The Damned is helping Plymouth's young rock musicians plan a national tour. In a groundbreaking initiative backed by Creative-Partnerships, the Chew Music Tour took its first steps to stardom last week in an inaugural session where hopefuls were selected to be part of the tour preparations.
Rick Rogers and Matt Booth, of Dartington Creative Enterprise, were amongst the mentors helping young people to plan and execute a rock music tour of schools and venues nationally.
Matt Booth is Chair of the Bristol Music Foundation and as a live promoter in Bristol, he has previously put on around 200 shows a year, including Coldplay and Travis. He was also Music Coordinator for Bristol’s Ashton Court Festival, and ran labels through Vital and Universal.
Rick Rogers started his career in the music industry with his own PR company Trigger in the late 1970s, guiding the early campaigns for Stiff Records (former home of Madness and Elvis Costello). He quickly expanded in to management with UK punk pioneers The Damned and launched the career of The Specials, running Two Tone Records with their astonishing succession of Top Ten hits.
Both Rick and Matt are helping young people from Plymouth to learn about the music industry – and showcase South West bands at the same time.
Young people from Plymouth will be taking part in the innovative and audacious Chew Music Tour project, thanks to support from Creative Partnerships and the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO), Dartington Creative Enterprise, Plymouth Music Zone and Chew TV – the internet TV channel.
The young people will be masterminding the Chew Music tour of UK schools and venues, booking hotels, taking care of the bands, setting up PA systems and working with lighting and video technical operators. The tour is due to take place in July this year.
To mastermind the tour, they will be working with South West-based mentors from the music industry, including Rick Rogers, former manager of the Specials, and Matt Booth, both based at Dartington Arts, Oli James, from Plymouth Music Collective and Plymouth Music Week and Katie Thompson, musician and PR person.
The selected young tour managers will be responsible for coordinating the tour, including booking venues for evening performances and booking schools for daytime performances and workshops, speaking to young people’s groups and local media throughout the UK to do so.
They will also be responsible for the technical operations of the tour, including transport and accommodation, press and PR, the uploading of music and videos to the supporting website www.chewtv.com, and facilitation and monitoring of the online voting process.
Creative Partnerships’ project manager TC Jefferson, himself a drummer in city jazz outfit The Half Quartet, said: “The idea is to empower young people from a variety of backgrounds to organise a tour that exports the finest young musical talent from Plymouth and Cornwall to the rest of the country - reinforcing the far South West as the place to be for young creative individuals.” He added that the the project will provide a platform for young people from the South West to work collaboratively with other groups of young people across the country.
Tour to get internet-TV coverage
The tour managing project is to be documented and shown on Chew TV – a South West-based internet TV channel run by and for young people, which is hoping to expand into a radio station and music label.
Chew TV is online at www.chewtv.com
The bands that will feature
Music mentors – recruited from the South West’s music industries - will provide a shortlist of bands and artists from Plymouth and Cornwall, representing various genres of music.
The selected tour managers will then select three bands/artistes from three distinct genres to take part in the Chew Music tour.
The Tour itself
The selected young tour managers have to arrange for the project to tour nationally.
The tour will focus on areas that have either Creative Partnerships or Youth Music Action Zone presence, allowing the managers to tap into local networks.
Whilst on tour, the bands will be carrying out workshops and performances in schools during the day. In the evening, bands will perform at public music venues. Some of these venues will be for over-18s only; others will be for all ages. In each town or city the bands will perform alongside local guest musicians.
People nationwide will have the opportunity to vote for a band that they liked the most – online at www.chewtv.com.
Said TC: “The quality of the music combined with the local and national coverage of the tour will ensure that slots in top venues can be secured. The fact that the tour is visiting top venues means that Plymouth will be recognised as the centre of this innovative, creative approach of musicians working with young musicians and artists.”
Arts Awards
The Chew Music Tour also aims to boost the profile of the Young Persons Arts Awards, and the young tour managers, musicians and artists will be gaining qualifications through the organisation and delivery of this tour.

Deadline: 22 May 2007
Are you passionate about developing the documentary form to tell your story? Do you have an innovative documentary idea with a strong environmental core, rooted in the South West? Are you ready to work with a broadcaster to deliver that idea to a national audience? We are looking for individuals who have the ambition and passion to produce a compelling documentary which will raise the profile of the region and develop their careers.
